Tallinn Botanic Garden & online

May 11-12, a physical conference at Tallinn Botanic Garden

The Tallinn Botanic Garden will be the main site of this year’s Biotoopia conference from May 11–12. The Tallinn Botanic Garden (Kloostrimetsa tee 52, Tallinn, 59°28’10”N 24°52’41”E) is situated in the eastern part of the city, ten kilometres from the city centre and three kilometres from the Pirita Yachting Centre. The area of the botanic garden is located in the old valley of the River Pirita. The region is bordered by a vast, sandy area of pinewoods. The Tallinn Television Tower is right in the vicinity of the botanic garden. Information on how to get to us can be found HERE! Biotoopia conference is a part of the Tallinn – European Green Capital 2023 programme.

May 11-12, an online conference platform for active participation and review

Due to the nature of that we will be holding a hybrid conference, the lectures, panels, and other conference sessions will be available online (time zone UTC + 03). The online platform will allow the participants to watch live broadcasts, follow the programme, download materials, ask questions and review later. Also, lecturers who are not able or choose not to travel to Tallinn will participate via the web. You will receive information on how to access the online platform after making a ticket purchase.

We have a new update since 2.05. Please be aware that the Estonian news site Postimees has provided us a chance to spread awareness more widely by offering a live stream of our online conference. You might not actively participate in it, and you couldn’t go back and rewatch it. Please get in touch with us if you had an online ticket purchase and feel like you should receive a refund. We would be really grateful, nevertheless, if you could still contribute to the technical development of our hybrid platform. As a citizen-based organisation, we rely heavily on grants and ticket sales and of course our great partners who offer these kind of possibilities for reaching people with all income levels.

Tallinn Botanic Garden is the best-developed area in the lower reach of Pirita River from the landscape architecture perspective. The botanic garden has spread over four terraces of Pirita River, where a network of winding paths was laid, and 9 ponds were dug out that mainly receive water from Lepiku channel. The pond among coniferous trees is the habitat of a multitude of white water lilies (Nymphaea alba). The plants are displayed against the northern and north-western background of mixed pine and oak forest, which is currently being transformed into a meadow-like oak forest by means of selective cutting. Open landscape displays, which cover approximately 22.5 ha, have around 6,500 exhibit items, and the greenhouses with about 2000 m2 of usable area boast 2000 plant items.

Art Day

Art Day

May 13, an art day through the Loopealse wasteland (location has changed)

Whereas the first two days will be filled with presentations and discussions, the Biotoopia art programme will take place on Saturday, May 13. The art programme invites the audience on a guided journey through the Loopealse wasteland (the location has changed) in Tallinn in Estonia. This happening will be an interactive whole combining site-specific sound and performance art with pagan folk singing. On this wasteland on the coast of Tallinn, multiple perspectives will meet, collide, and melt into one another. Held by the force of ritual and oral tradition, we will resist the loneliness of individualism and human exceptionalism. Every act here will intertwine into a collective, relational network.

Everyone who purchases a ticket will receive the precise physical location of the art program via email one week in advance. This event will happen in any possible weather conditions. Please dress accordingly.
